Flute System

Flute System

The JLT system of the ship S7000 had to be equipped with a new Flute System for South Stream Project. This device is used during the lay operations in order to control the bending pipe during the normal lay. Anyway the Flute is able to permit to operate the pipe during accidental condition (eg. flooded pipe, A&R). Fazzini Meccanica has designed five of the six roller levels of the Flute.

The South Stream Flute System is composed by six rollers level numbered from R1 to FL4 respectively from the top to the bottom and by a steel rollers at bottom level. Levels R1 and FL0 is included in the basket structural frame where levels from FL1 to FL4 and steel rollers level are included in a Flute structural frame. The purpose of the present specification is to describe the minimum technical and functional requirement to supply the Flute System including rollers levels from R1 to FL0 (out of scope of supply) and from FL1 to FL4 plus steel roller level. The flute main purpose is to avoid any pipe over bend and kink effect at the JLT exit that could damage permanently the pipeline. Moreover each roller level shall be able to sustain the pipe load without damaging the pipe coating due to an excess of contact stress.
